Hongshankou Fm
Type Locality and Naming
Beishan. The Hongshankou Fm was named by Zhao Xiangsheng in 1984, the typical section is situated in Hongshankou in Ejin Qi, Nei Mongol Zizhiqu (Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region).
Synonym: (红山口组)
Lithology and Thickness
The Hongshankou Fm is dominated by variegated pebbly sandy slate, sandy limestone, crystalline limestone (marble) and dolomite. It locally has basal pebbly dolomitic limestone, dolomitic, siltstone or pelitic, calcareous and carbonaceous shale intercalated with manganiferous shale or manganese ore, which was found to intercalate occasionally with till sheet dominated by marine facies. It has a thickness ranging from 48 to 183 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
The Hongshankou Fm rests conformably and transitionally on the underlying till-rich Xichangjing Fm
Upper contact
It disconformably underlies the Lower Cambrian Shuangyingshan Fm.
Regional extent
Beishan. Inner Mongolia and northernmost Gansu. The Hongshankou Formation is dominantly exposed in Xichangjing, Hongshankou area in Ejin Qi, Inner Mongolia and sporadically exposed in Zelumu and south of Shuangying Mountain in Gansu Province. It is not so widespread as the Xichangjing Formation.

Fossils
On south of Shuangying Mountain, the sequence was found to yield microplants, including Protoleiosphaeridium sp., Leiosphaeridium sp., Laminarites sp., Micrhystridium sp. etc. and sponge spicules.
